HISTORY

Visual Anthropology Review was first published in fall 1990 “incorporating both previous SVA and visually-oriented AAA publications from 1970 onward (i.e., Society for Visual Anthropology Review [1990], SVA Newsletter [1985–89], Studies in the Anthropology of Visual Communication [1974–79], and Program in Ethnographic Film Newsletter [1970–74])” (Buckley & Lewis 2009, 9). Early essays were anthologized and republished by the journal’s first editor, Lucien Castaing-Taylor, in Visualizing Theory: Selections from V.A.R. 1990–1994.
